Initial ideas for final music video: Yankee and The Brave (ep. 4)

The video idea I have had is a fight scene set to the song "Yankee and The Brave (ep. 4)" by Run The Jewels - the video in question will be a narrative, tongue in cheek postmodernist pastiche parody of 80s and 90s Kung Fu and samurai movies as well as combining it with tropes of school movies. The song I have chosen is an anthem as it is made by the radical progressive band Run The Jewels and is the famous debut single on their 4th album RTJ4 which released in 2020, the song is one of their most successful and is popular amongst fans and non-fans alike and remains a prolific protest song to this day due to it's criticism of police brutality I plan to use the connotations of Yankee and The Brave - that it is a parody of Saturday Morning Cartoons which ran adjacent to the 80s and 90s media I will be basing the video on. The video will be composed of two parts - the intro, which will be parodic of consumer culture and will be me and Anton beginning to watch the rest of the ...

1 minute music video project - Weapon of Choice by Fatboy Slim

For my practice for music video creation I will be making a custom 1 minute music video to the Fatboy Slim song "Weapon of Choice" For this video I will take advantage of the teleportation technique I perfected with my Matrix videos as well as using some stop motion to create the illusion of invisible vehicles

Colour connotations of music videos

Colours can be vital to creating atmosphere in music videos - I will have to pay close attention to what I do with my colours  Synasthesia for example can be triggered by colours and stuff in music videos

Textual analysis of music videos

Image
As a task, Mr Welch has given us a playlist of music videos to analyse and how they represent things: 1. All Caps by MF DOOM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSJeHDlhYls In this video the style of a 1950s golden age pop art comic is used to pay tribute to the comics such as Marvel and DC who inspired DOOM in his childhood to create music and adopt his stage persona: That of a stereotypical comic book villain, DOOM himself is represented in the video as a hulking scientific mutant - a prototypical character archetype of the day inspired by characters like the Hulk or The Thing The song and video complement the "virtual band" esque aesthetic of DOOM - maintaining the illusion that he is this fantasy character presented to us in the video 2. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyHNuVaZJ-k This video by Gorillaz is chock full of representations, for example: The outside world in the video is represented as drab, lifeless and chaotic - as shown by the ...

Matrix ad subtask 1: Behind the scenes

A subtask that I will need to complete will be to make a behind the scenes interview video for the ads.

Matrix ad 2: Cell

Image
In this ad we see Cell discussing with Gabriel about how they need him to wake up and offers him the red or blue pills (1) Have you ever felt like something is missing from your world? (2) Like you've been given a puzzle with all the pieces but one. (3) What if I told you I could give you that piece and you could see the picture for what it really is? I will warn you though, it is by no means a free trade, (4) there are people and things out there who will give everything they have to keep it. (5) So, are you out, or are you in? (1) - Cell is sat down in a tree, talking to Gabriel (2) - Shows a person walking past Gabriel and disappearing (3) - Cuts back to Cell and Gabriel (4) - Shows Cell and Gabriel being confronted by Moore, who pulls out his gun (5) - Cuts to Cell offering the red and blue pills   The characters in the ad will be: Gabriel Cell Agent Moore Below is the storyboard I completed on paper - some events have been changed as I worked as I found they were better ...

The ad covers the main character Gabriel Light being interviewed in a room about a woman known as "Cell". Storyboarding and shotlisting

Storyboards are a type of pre-production document mad before shooting begins. This will offer a concise and complete representation of how the finished shot may look. storyboards must include various things from sketches and their explanations, sound info and camera info etc. so every member of production knows exactly what they need to do. Storyboards are vital as they will detail how the shot looks and make sure a satisfying shot can be created through intense planning as they help to organize everything and highlight weaker elements. Things to remember - do not neglect backgrounds, you do not need to know how to draw well. Use arrows and boxes to represent movement of characters, cameras, lighting, etc.. Use numbering to signify order. Be detailed, should tell who is responsible for what - confusion must be avoided. Storyboards let you be concise with filming. However: remember that sequences are liable to change and sometimes storyboards are not concerete. Write time indicator...

Sci-fi ad 3: "Artifact"

You cannot blame me for the shortsightedness of humanity. All this time you held the key to real change yet never the will to carry it out. Events are underway that will change things forever - there is a storm coming - and you need to know what side you are on.

Sci-fi ad 4: "Spiral"

"(1) MURPHY!(2) You're finished Kello (3), it's gone. The bomb? I'll just make another, besides (4) I (5) don't need a bomb to kill you." (1) - Shows Murphy walking across a plane, evidently injured (2) - Murphy turns and sees Kello stumbling after him (3) - The camera cuts to the two men fighting  (4) - The camera cuts to the two men fighting (5) - Kello and Murphy both settle into fighting positions (6) - The two men run at each other as the camera cuts to black

Sci-fi ad 2: "Zealot"

"(1) Events are in motion now that you are powerless to stop. (2) this is bigger than you, me or your crew, (3) I'm talking about the next big leap for humankind - I will not let you take this away from me (4), (5) and if you try to? I'll put you down. (1) - Shows the leader walking, backed by many cultists (2) - Shows cultist leader executing crewmembers (3) - shows cultist leader with the glowing object (4) - Cut to black (5) - Shows cultist leader talking to Jones

Sci-fi ad 1: "Alone"

Script: "(1) My name is Jones, (2) my ship has been shot down by a group of Cultists (3) who are harvesting the planet to build a dark matter bomb capable of killing billions, of my crew I am the sole survivor. If anybody can hear this transmission - (6) stay the hell away. (1) - Jones sits down by a radio and switches it one (2) - Footage is shown of the ship crashing (3) - The cultists are shown parting to allow the leader to step through (4) - The leader is shown holding out a glowing canister (5) - The leader is shown executing a crew member (6) - Cut to black To create this ad I will need to create footage of the ship crashing - t

Online advetisement

Online advertising is the fastest growing type of advertising as it is very useful in it's purpose. One of it's main selling points is it's ability to "microtarget" this is where specific groups and niches are advertised towards with things they are more likely to be interested in - maximizing profits along the way. but how do they know what people are interested in? Because we consent to spying effectively, for example we allow cookies onto our phones  which transmit our location and personal data, then we use always on microphones such as personal assistants who are always listening to the words we speak. A large problem with online editing however is that is is unregulated - meaning there is nobody to oversee it so nobody can deal with an ad if it is misleading, incorrect or offensive - leading to a sort of wild west for advertisement Offline or television advertising however is regulated by the ASA who make sure everything is above board and correct. There ar...

Media creation task: 4x15 second advertisements

Now comes the time for my first independent media creation task. I will be doing four 15-second adverts for a sci-fi television series called "Wrong place, Wrong Time", alongside this I will make a behind the scenes interview to promote the series. The idea I have had is a space explorer who is marooned on an alien planet by a leader of a space cult who wishes to create a black hole and destroy the planet, all alone on the planet - he must find a way to defeat them with his wits and survival skills. To create this I will need a minimum of two characters: the Explorer (played by my brother Anton) and The Cultist leader (played by me) and maybe some miscellaneous henchmen for some scenes. The four ads will be: 1. "Marooned": In this one the Explorer will introduce himself and explain The Cultist's plot 2. "Zealot": In this we get narration from the Cultist Leader over footage from the show 3. "Crash": The ship is shown to be crashing as the pi...

Whole class editing task

Image
Due to problems with the Adobe premiere editing software Mr Welch elected that we perform and edit a whole class film. To do this we first brainstormed an idea for a plot - a reality tv show featuring an Ofsted inspector enters Tupton hall and is mistaken for a teacher, then must somehow teach a lesson he has no idea how to teach. After this we filmed the scenes, utilizing the exterior of the school, the PE block back door, Mr Welch's classroom and an office as sets. However as I was preoccupied on the day of filming my scenes (and the rest of the talking heads) were filmed on the day afterwards. Once filming had finished I edited them together. To add some flair I made use of music in the intro and outro sections but made an effort to not use it outside of those zones - to preserve the look and feel of a legitimate and real reality tv show. Furthermore I added some colour correction and lens flare to all exterior and hallway shots to make the outside look visually appealing and m...

Foley sound

On the 18th of November I learned about Foley sound. Foley sound is sound that is created by a sound engineer to imitate another sound - such as sizzling bacon imitating raindrops. Foley sound is useful as it can create realistic and effective sounds while simultaneously saving costs as so sound effects need to be bought. this sound can add a new feeling to a scene - such as the destruction of a pepper turning an arm strain into a cringe-inducing bone break or the slapping of a watermelon turning a tense fight scene into a slapstick comedy. Sound generally goes unnoticed but it is very important to how a scene turns out   Foley sound is carried out generally in professional recording studios by sound artists who are trained in how to utilise normal objects to create realistic sound

Shots demonstration

Image
In this short film I have demonstrated a litany of different shot types in order to showcase all the different ways a shot can be constructed in order to give new meaning to a scene For example I opened the film with a high angle establishing shot, to not only establish the room but to also demonstrate the mise-en-scene I have set up (All computers deactivated and all lights off except for the one in the very centre) this mise-en-scene and lighting focuses the viewer on the computer and paints it as an object of importance.

Kuleshov effect

Image
Here is my Kuleshov task. I have used filters and different events occurring after a central beginning to change the meaning of the opening smile scene in retrospect For example the theme of the shot has been changed entirely by the second one which changes it into a western style gunfight instead of a friendly greeting like in the first one Or by changing it into a tense, murderer's smile by following it with a slow, methodical tracking shot of the gun
